I was born in the Dyess hospital and have many fond memories of my childhood in Dyess. I am blessed to have grown up in sucah a place where everyone was family.
I think about all those I grew up with and played basketball with often.

My family moved to Dyess in March 1936. I was 9 years old and this was all new on road 10a, we were the first family to move in. I joined the CCC in 1942 and stayed 6 months. Joined the Navy in DEC. 1944, came home on 5 day leave after boot camp and married the girl next door. Johnnie Murphy (and we are still married) have 3 children ( 1 boy 2 girls) all live here in Shelby co. TN. We left Dyess in 1950, lived in Blytheville 1 year and moved to Memphis 1951. I am retired from IH Memphis plant and retired in 1985. I have enjoyed being retired. I have attended ALL the DYESS reunions. I have gathered the history of Dyess From the beginning and have a DYESS COLONY WEB SITE: This is where I spend most of my time because of my wife's health I cant leave her alone for any long pea-rd of time. I Have people on my WS who lived at Dyess, visited Grandparents who lived at Dyess. I have pictures old and the present on this site. I get up every morning and visit with people all over the UNITED STATES.
I love Dyess and hope to live long enough to see the J R Cash memorial building completed. Thanks to Gene Williams for giving the money to Dyess to by the Administration Building. Thanks you for all the work you do on this site.

My mother, her brothers, sisters, mother and father were chosen for the Dyess Colony
program. Up to this day, there is still talk about Dyess although all the brothers,
sisters, mother and father are all passed on with the exception of William (Eddyce)
Gordey. Malcomb Leonard Gordey passed away a year ago in Feb, but both Uncles spoke
about Dyess some of the last times they were together. Cora and Lawrence Gordey were
my grandparents and we heard stories from their days in Dyess so many times while we
grew up. My mother was Eddye Gordey who later married Melvin Foster. I have been to Dyess twice during the last 2 years, took pictures and gave copies to my uncles. They were ecstatic with the pictures and talked about Dyess for hours. I would like to attend the Dyess days celebration and will be checking into all the details.
Thank you for having this site to enable all who know about Dyess to talk about
a place and time in our parents' lives which was so very special to them.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Jane Foster Deal

I'm only 5 years younger than the original colony!! I grew up near Dallas/Ft.Worth, TX, but some of the older images could easily have been in Texas as well. I guess I'm just so intrigued with the town because I share the name! Thank you for all the information on your website. It is most interesting to someone who shares the historical name.

I lived at Dyess from 1936-1949. I was a member of the DHS 1950 until I left in 1949. I no longer live at Dyess, but my heart will always be there. Growing up with and being a friend of J. R. Cash was a high light of my life.

So pleased that the Johnny Cash Memorial is progressing and is really putting
Dyess prominently on the map. Since our family arrived at Dyess on the very
first day (one of the 13 families), and watched and helped the community
develop over the years, I feel that I have a vested interest. Even way out here in West Texas people ask me about Dyess and Johnny Cash and what it was like there.
Keep up the good work!

My family farmed at Bondsville, but I was born in 1948 at the Dyess Hospital. You have done an excellent job with the website. Looking at the old pictures was a lot of fun!
